IN SUNDAY’S GAMES, ONLY THE BEST TEAMS – AND QBS — REMAIN

It’s no accident that the four best players at their position in the NFL – Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers – are the only quarterbacks left playing as we move toward Sunday’s AFC and NFC championship games.

The other quarterbacks in the league – the ones who are pretty good, kind of good, good most of the time, good much of the time, good some of the time, good a little of the time, good hardly any of the time and good absolutely none of the time, with no chance of ever being good, even just a little bit — are sitting at home and watching the games just like you and me, your Uncle Walter, your friend down the street, your co-workers, your old high school classmates, the butcher at your local supermarket and Big Al, the guy who services your car.

Pass the popcorn, get your cold drinks ready and make sure y’all have comfy places from which to watch the games, which promise to be classics.

I mention all this – I always mention these kinds of things, especially at this point of the year – because there’s a direct correlation to the Browns, for whom no games were classics during the 2016 season.

The Browns, of course, do not have their franchise quarterback – at least if they have him, they don’t know they have him. So that’s something – something so big that you can’t even quantify it – that they have to do if they ever want to get to where they want to go. And that is to make it to not just to this point of the season, but past it, to the Super Bowl, and then to win it – more than one time.

It’s great that the Browns, as I write this, appear to be on the verge of signing linebacker Jamie Collins to a long-term contract. That will certainly help the team’s journey.

However – and this is a big However – the Browns’ rebuilding effort doesn’t really begin in earnest, or at least is taken seriously, until they get their guy at quarterback, which is the most important position in team sports.

So watch the games on Sunday and enjoy them to the fullest, but focus – really, truly focus — on the quarterbacks, for those guys are the be-all and end-all of great teams, and teams like the Browns that want to be great.
