We always tell you that on this website, you will see interesting and thought-provoking stories not found anywhere else.
Indeed, we don’t take the stuff you’re reading here, there and everywhere and just rehash it. No, sir, and no, ma’am.
And now is one of those times.
Wednesday was Pearl Harbor Day. It was exactly 81 years ago, on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked the Hawaiian naval base by that name, sending the U.S. into World War II.
Almost all of the players on those first Browns teams served in the war. Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver, and Hudson High School and Ohio State product, Dante Lavelli was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts. Another Hall of Famer and Ohio State product, kicker/left tackle Lou Groza, from Martins Ferry High School, practiced his kicking on an island in the Pacific during his limited spare time.
Serving in the war helped steel those young men. After that experience, trying to keep their cool during a tight moment on the football field was a snap.
We just need to keep that in mind, especially on a day like this, because without the efforts of those long-ago Browns and all those other men, and women, who so bravely served, our lives, our country and our world would be quite different, and certainly not for the better.
