Stop the Presses: The Browns Plan to Fix Their Offense

Another ‘No-Kidding Headline,’ This Time About the Browns

We used to have a name for this type of headline in the newsroom back in the day.

I can’t repeat that here, because it’s not suitable for a general audience to see.

To keep it clean, let’s call it a “no-kidding headline,” and leave it at that. That’s close enough to the target.

I saw a headline like that the other day that stated, in so many words, that NFL Draft experts say the hiring of Todd Monken as Browns head coach enhances the team’s focus on offense, especially as it relates to the draft.

No kidding?

Seriously?

Wow! You figured that out? You must be some kind of sleuth. You must be really smart. You must really know your football.

OK, if you know so much, then can you reassure me that the sun will come up tomorrow morning, the cold weather will eventually dissipate and that sometime before April 15 we all have to pay our taxes? Can you decipher those tough questions, too? We are all dying to know your opinion.

The Browns had one of the worst offenses in the NFL this season and one of the worst in their long history. It was hard to watch. After a while, you almost hoped that the offense would just punt on first down and then turn it over to that outstanding defense to win the game.

Monken was hired because he has extensive coaching offensive experience. Jim Schwartz did not get the job because his acumen is steep in things on the defensive side of the ball, where, because of the job he did,  where the Browns already excel.

For the Browns to go anywhere, they’ve got to really, really improve on offense. It has to come in quantum leaps and bounds.

So, considering all that, don’t you think the Browns will have a heavy focus on offense in the draft? If there was a focus anywhere else other than the offense with those picks, then there should be a revolt by their fans.

It doesn’t take a draft expert to see any of that.

It just takes somebody with a little bit — not even a lot — of common sense.

And I hope the next time when somebody writes a headline like that, somebody else stops them and has them go back and try again to do something that does not belabor the obvious.
