The number is fluid, so please excuse me if it has changed once again and gotten bigger — or perhaps smaller, though not likely — between me writing this and you reading this, but as of last count, the Browbs have six quarterbacks on the roster as they continue to get ready for Friday night’s preseason opener against the host Carolina Panthers.
There are the four primary guys whose last names are Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders, along with newcomer Tyler Huntley, doing his second stint with the club, and then there’s the forgotten man, Deshaun Watson.
Watson, forgotten?
Yeah, certainly. With all this fuss going on with the Browns quarterbacks, when’s the last time you thought of Watson, whose chances to ever take a snap again for Cleveland — in a game or simply just a practice — are the same as mine, yours and your next-door neighbor?
OK, do Watson doesn’t exactly have a future, or even a present, with the Browns. But he is still their property, and what happens if at some point he gets healthy and they have to decide to keep him on the roster, trade him or release him or something else?
If he ends up going somewhere else, then where is that? Could it be with a team like the Baltimore Ravens, whose quarterback, Lamar Jackson, has a style similar to that of Watson?
Whatever the case, the Browns have a big decision coming up down the road. But that’s not their main focus right now with the quarterbacks. Rather, it is that rookie Shadeur Sanders is going to start against the Panthers. That ought to be a lot of fun to watch. I still believe he has a real future in the NFL, despite what some people in the Browns organization may think.
