Sipe throws for 4 TDs in rout of Bengals in 1980

Editor’s note: The following, about the contest against the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 23 at Cleveland Stadium, is the 12th in a series of stories on the games that made up the Browns’ 1980 Kardiac Kids season. This is the 35th anniversary of that memorable year.

There weren’t many one-sided games during the Kardiac Kids season.

But one of them occurred 35 years ago today, on Nov. 23, 1980 at Cleveland Stadium.

Brian Sipe threw four touchdown passes and the Browns, after falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, ran off 31 unanswered points to rout the Cincinnati Bengals 31-7 before another packed house of 79,253 at Cleveland Stadium.

The win, which put their record at 8-4 three-fourths of the way through the year, moved them back into a first-place tie with the Houston Oilers in the AFC Central.

Sipe’s scoring passes went to four different players – wide receiver Reggie Rucker on a 16-yarder, running back Calvin Hill on a five-yarder, running back Greg Pruitt on a two-yarder and wide receiver Ricky Feacher on a 55-yarder.

Sipe completed 27 of 36 passes overall for 310 yards with one interception.

Rucker had seven receptions in all for 82 yards, Pruitt six for 67 yards and wide receiver Dave Logan six for 50 yards.

Don Cockroft finished the scoring in a fourth quarter with a 31-yard field goal.

The Cleveland defense did its job as well, intercepting Ken Anderson twice.

After so many tight games, it was a nice to finally have a breather.

But it wouldn’t last for long.
