IT’S SILLY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN SILLY SEASON

You might well think otherwise, but there is very little real, legitimate news going in pro football at this time, which is something that won’t change much in the now less than two weeks until the start of the three-day 2017 NFL Draft.

It may look like news and sound like news, but it really isn’t. It’s fake news. Donald Trump would be happy. It’s right in the president’s wheelhouse.

All these stories about anonymous sources saying this and that about what players teams like and what they are going to do to try to put themselves into position to draft them, are supposition. They’re rumors. They’re hearsay. They’re wild stabs in the dark. They’re made up. They’re purposely-placed lies. They’re half-truths. They’re sports babble. They’re educated guesses, without the “educated.”

In other words, don’t believe them – at least don’t take them at full value.

Really, the only news is that there would be anyone foolish enough to believe them.

This is silly season in the NFL, and if you get hooked, then you’re part of the silliness.

All the teams – all of them — are trying to lay a false trail as to what their true intentions are to throw the opposition off and force a trade or to do whatever that is beneficial to them. It’s the biggest high-stakes poker game there is, and if you called everyone’s bluffs when there was good reason to, you’d be hoarse by the end of the day.

I say this – again – because there are stories out that the Browns are split between taking Myles Garrett or Mitch – er, excuse me, Mitchell – Trubisky at No. 1 overall. The Browns have been so tight-lipped with everyone – everyone! – with their draft plans that it’s impossible to know what is really going on. The Browns want other teams to think there’s a split. Why do you think they floated the story? No team is going to show its cards until that first round on the evening of April 27, and when that time rolls around, we’ll all find out together.

For the Browns – or any other team – to do anything but try to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes between now and then would be … well, silly.
