“Shedeur Sanders Steals the Spotlight in Browns’ Preseason Opener”

Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been the talk of not just the town, but of the entire country as well, since Friday night’s 30–10 victory over the host Carolina Panthers in the preseason opener.

The most polarizing first-year player in the NFL, and someone who, according to the pundits, is grossly overrated or will be the unquestioned Rookie of the Year, he showed much more of the later, completing 13 of 24 passes for 138 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while starting and playing into the third quarter.

Afterward, beginning in the overnight hours into Saturday, continuing throughout the day and then into Sunday, he was on seemingly every media outlet, in both general sports as well as in pro football, his performance getting scrutinized and, in the same breath, praised, profusely so.

It’s been all Shedeur, all of the time.

The only person pushing back — if only mildly — was Sanders’ own guy, Kevin Stefanski. But that’s what head coaches do. Their job is to be slow to build up, or tear down, straddling the middle as best they can until all the facts and data are in and things have played out to their natural end.

I get all that. I really, truly do.

But at the same time, let’s be real here — real honest, that is. When you see something so special that your jaw drops and it stops you dead in your tracks, you want to see more, not less. You want to find out if it was an anomaly or the start of a series.

The Browns — especially Stefanski along with offensive coaches, and, of course, General Manager Andrew Berry — can’t try so hard to hold down the lid of this box that it impedes the chances for it to fly open and shoot off fireworks again.
