Shedeur Sanders: Fast Start, Wrong Direction

As the mandatory OTAs wind down each year and everybody in the NFL gets ready to go on vacation heading into training camp in about about five weeks or so, head coaches warn players in no uncertain terms to stay away from people and situations that could get them into trouble. Then the coaches wait nervously, hoping that their phone doesn’t ring with bad news. It didn’t take long for the Browns’ Kevin Stefanski to learn that one of his most high-profile players wasn’t listening and/or taking the warning seriously. Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders got pulled over for driving 101 miles per hour in a 60 zone. Ugh! Double-ugh! Those who believe Sanders thinks he’s above the rules just got a Terminal Tower-sized amount of evidence to support their contention.

That’s a black mark for Sanders, asall those in that crowded quarterback room, especially the rookies, including also Dillon Gabriel, are being evaluated on everything, even irresponsibility and dangerous driving. So, in that respect, then, and at least for the time being, Sanders has taken a back seat to Gabriel, so to speak.

Hopefully, Sanders will learn from his poor judgment and understand the importance of being as good off the field as on it. He needs to gain the trust of everyone again. Let’s also hope that the incident will serve as proof to his teammates that Stefanski wasn’t kidding. This kind of nonsense can indeed happen, and does — a lot.

But at the same time, the Browns have a responsibility not to harp on it. Just make the point again and move on. These are grown men.

Perhaps the best thing is that no one was hurt and Sanders has a long time to think about it all before camp begins. We’ll see if he takes advantage of it.
