He could run fast and throw the ball a long way, and right on a dime.
To be sure, he was a tremendous athlete who could beat the opposition with his legs just as much as with his arm
He was smart.
He was a leader.
He had charisma.
And he was a great young man, the kind you’d like your daughter to bring home to meet you.
He was all that, and more.
When I watched Robert Griffin III play at Baylor, I remember thinking it, writing it, saying it and being convinced of it.
That is, “I have seen the future of quarterbacking.”
I still think it, will still write it and say it, and am still convinced of it.
Really. Truly. Honestly.
Yes, RG III is still that guy. Those abilities are still there.
Yes, his ego has been hurt, along with his body.
But he’s still RG III, that man among boys.
Now it is on Browns head coach Hue Jackson to find a way to pull all that out of him after the team signed the free agent to a two-year contract on Thursday.
It won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight.
Maybe it won’t happen at all.
But if there is anyone who can resurrect RG III’s career, it is Jackson, who has a doctorate in quarterbacks.
The Browns are desperately looking for their guy at quarterback – their face of the franchise.
RG III is desperately looking to be the guy at quarterback – that face of the franchise, just as he was for the Washington Redskins in that glorious rookie season of 2012.
They need each other, the Browns and RG III.
But are the stars all aligned in just the right way for it to happen?
That remains to be seen.
But it’s exciting.
For Hue Jackson.
For Robert Griffin III.
For Browns fans.
