You just can’t make this stuff up.
You really can’t.
It’s too crazy, too improbable and too unbelievable. As such, then, nobody — absolutely nobody — would believe it.
We’re talking about the Browns in their magical run. It continued Thursday night in a major way as they defeated the New York Jets 37–20 to move to 11-5 and earn a playoff spot for the first time since 2020, and for only the third time in 21 years.
This is the most incredible season in Browns history, and I guess I can say that because I’ve been called the defacto Browns historian. I think what that really is, is a kind way of saying that I’m very old and have seen a lot of things, and I plead guilty on both of those charges.
There has been nothing like this in the team’s history. There’s nothing even close to it, really. In 1988, when Don Strock rescued the Browns, quarterback was the only position at which they were all beat up. Otherwise, they were pretty healthy. And then in that unbelievable Kardiac Kids season of 1980, the Browns didn’t have many injuries at all. They just kept winning games at the very end.
The story for 2023 just keeps getting more and more incredible. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you find out you ain’t seen nothing yet.
And with that, then, I hope that everybody who is watching this is taking a good long look at it and trying to commit it all to memory, because someday, you will tell people about the 2023 Browns season and as you talk, they won’t believe a word of what you’re saying. But that’s OK. You’ll know it’s true because you watched it happen.
This is truly special. We are all blessed beyond our wildest dreams to be able to be witnesses. We are seeing things for which there is no plausible explanation. We wonder how that happened, and it’s a good question because there’s no reason why it should’ve happened.
Enjoy it for this next week or so leading up to the Bengals game on Jan. 7 in Cincinnati, and revel in a season that will go down in history. And you are, again, the witnesses to all this, so it is your job to carry this message forward to as many people as you can for as many years as you can because it is that extraordinary.
