IF IT’S REALLY MYLES GARRETT, WOULD YOU BE OK WITH THAT?

As we’ve said any number of times for who knows how long, the months leading up to the NFL Draft is known as “silly season.”

As teams posture publicly to try to hide their true intentions, nothing they say can be believed – at least fully so.

It’s been that way for a long, long time.

And it’s that way again as the first day of this year’s draft is now just a week away. That’s especially true for the Browns, who own the top of the draft with picks Nos. 1, 12 and 33 overall and five choices among the first 65.

The Browns held their annual pre-draft press conference on Wednesday. Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Browns and Vice President of Player Personnel Andrew Berry spent their lengthy time at the dais at the Dino Lucarelli Media Room saying a lot, but in essence not saying anything definitive. So things went as expected.

After sifting through all the fluff, there are some media members who contend that it appears – appears – the Browns are planning to select Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett at No. 1. It would certainly not be a shock if that happened, for many draft “experts” have been predicting that for weeks.

For sake of argument, let’s say that all these media people are right and that Garrett is indeed the guy. Would you be happy with that?

I think most of you would say yes.

There are no guarantees with Garrett or any of these other prospects. There has never been a perfect, can’t-miss, draft pick, and there never will be. They have flaws – e very single one of them.

But of all the prospects this year, the general consensus – by a wide margin – is that Garrett is the best player out there.

After finishing just 1-15 last season, the Browns need the best player – and a lot of other really good ones as well.

As we said, though, Garrett could still be a flop. But if that happened, then everybody would be wrong.

Taking Garrett makes sense to one and all, and doing what makes sense, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, is always the best course of action. Play the odds, and then play the guy in the fall.
