I saw a story recently in which the author said they didn’t care who starts at quarterback for the Browns on Sunday in their game against the Arizona Cardinals at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The same author wrote another story recently in which they gleefully declared, apparently to get people to read it, I guess, that it had nothing to do with the Browns quarterbacks.
Sigh.
Once again, for the umpteenth time, let me very clear in reiterating what all of you are well aware of, because you really know football, and it is that you can write this story and that story and any other story, and they mostly don’t matter a hill of beans unless they involve the quarterbacks. Since Otto Graham — perhaps you’ve heard of him — and the early Browns revolutionized the passing game by bringing it out of the Stone Age era, football has become all about the quarterbacks. If you’ve got a good one, then you’ve got a chance, and if you don’t, then you don’t. The team with the best quarterback usually wins the game. That’s why every team jumps through hoops trying to get their guy.
So, then, yes, the quarterbacks matter — a whole lot. You could write about the quarterbacks every day to capture the gist of the team, and at the same time put something out there that people want to read. As such, you’ve fed two birds with one scone.
Deshaun Watson is back in as the starting quarterback for the Browns against Arizona, so let the conversation begin — or continue, as it were. Now the Browns have an even greater chance to win.
