QUALITIES OF THE NEXT HEAD COACH?

By STEVE KING

Here the Browns are again, looking to hire a new head coach and, in some respects, or possibly in a good number of respects, start over.

As horrible, numbing, sickening, disappointing and repetitious all this is – and its certainly all that, and then some – it is also hopeful in that the Browns have another chance to get it figured out, and Freddie Kitchens obviously wasn’t the right man for the job.

This coaching search is great for all the radio and TV sports talk show hosts and analysts. They don’t have to do anything but throw out the topic and start offering input while, in a lot of cases, opening up the phones to let all those great Browns fans – you – to give your thoughts. It’s a veritable lay-up, as it were.

The ratings will be through the roof.

Who should the Browns hire?

Who knows? And the people who tell you that they know, aren’t really being honest – at least at this dearly juncture – because they don’t know, either.

A disciplinarian, given that the Browns were woefully lacking in discipline this season? Yes, sure, of course.

A communicator, since so much of coaching – today, now more than ever, with players wanting to know why with everything – is getting the message across loud and clear, in no uncertain terms? Yes, sure, of course.

A keen offensive mind, since today’s game is almost all about offense and moving ball and scoring points? Yes, sure, of course.

Someone who understands the AFC North and what it takes not just to compete, but to win and conquer? Yes, sure, of course.

Someone who understands – really, truly, sincerely understands – the Browns, where they’re at, where they’ve been and where they want to go, along with what they mean to their fans and to this part of the country? Yes, sure, of course.

And someone with the right experience, whatever that is deemed to be? Yes, sure, of course.

In short, I don’t care who the Browns hire as their next head coach, as long as he’s the right man.
