So Josh Gordon meets with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday and some people are all abuzz about the possibility that the suspended Browns wide receiver could be reinstated soon.
Really?
Gordon could apply for reinstatement as early as Aug. 1, three days after the Browns open training camp.
I can try to win the Mega Millions Lottery, but the chances of that happening are also slim and none, and inconsequential in the big picture.
Certainly, it goes without saying that the Browns would be helped greatly if Gordon, who was suspended indefinitely in 2014 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, were to return. But for that to happen, Goodell and the NFL must give the OK, and Gordon must stay out of trouble so he doesn’t get suspended yet again.
The NFL may eventually say yes to his return, but Gordon has shown no ability to remain clean for any length of time. So he flashes like a shooting star and then fizzles and crashes over the horizon. Nothing changes for the Browns. Why waste your time?
The Browns will, of course, stay on top of the Gordon situation. They have to. It behooves them. And why not? They have nothing to lose. It would do no good to cut him, for he doesn’t count against their salary cap when he’s under suspension.
But if you think head coach Hue Jackson is laying awake at night fantasizing about what Gordon could mean to his work-in-progress offense, you’re delusional.
Jackson has a lot on his plate right now as camp gets ready to open, most importantly how to handle the Isaiah Crowell situation. Perhaps you heard about that. As such, he doesn’t have one second of the day – not even a millisecond — to worry about a player who will likely have little or no chance to ever help his team, or any NFL team.
Sad, but true. The focus should be on making sure Gordon gets his life turned around. Forget all this crazy stuff about catching touchdown passes.
