“PR Failure: Browns Rookie Laughs Off Lawbreaking While Team Fumbles the Optics”

This from Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders at teammate David Njoku’s celebrity softball game as he discussed his run-ins with the law over his recent driving misadventures:

“I made some wrong decisions,” he said with a laugh.  “I gotta own up to them. I learn from them. “

Whoa! Wait a minute. What is, “he said with a laugh?”

Is going 101 miles per hour — 40 over the speed limit — and putting yourself and others traveling on Interstate 71 in the Cleveland area at the time suddenly funny? Is it the punch line for a joke? Is Sanders really sorry or is he just story he got caught?

As I said in my last post, I’m not going to keep beating Sanders over the head with the story. However, the person who really needs to be admonished by what Sanders said at the softball game is Peter John-Baptiste, who is in charge of the Browns media relations snf what communications. Where in the heck was he when Sanders was doing this, making a fool of himself and of the Browns? Didn’t John-Baptiste talk to him? Didn’t he take Sanders aside and tell him to be contrite and serious and to act truly sorry for what he did? And if John-Bapyiste did none of these things, then why was he so derelict in his duties?

What a PR disaster that was? And it’s all the fault of John Baptiste. That he and the Browns let Sanders go out there and say what he said, and with the way he said it, is just unacceptable. That’s what you have PR people for, to manage your message. The only thing John-Baptiste managed to do was make matters worse.

Can we talk Kevin Byrne into coming out of retirement? He never would have let any of this happen. He was a pro’’s pro, one of the best PR directors in not just the NFL, but all of pro sports.
