POSITION YOURSELF TO BE OPEN TO ANYTHING
By STEVE KING
Will the Browns use their first-round pick, at No. 26 overall, in the NFL Draft later this week to address the need at edge rusher?
Or will they do it to address the need at edge rusher?
Or perhaps will they address the need at linebacker?
Or will they address a need elsewhere?
What will they do? What position will they fortify?
We don’t know the answers to any and all of these questions, and it really doesn’t matter. But of this we can be sure: Wherever position the Browns address, it will be one thst needs an upgrade. I trust the Browns to do that — to get the very best value so as to “maximize the long-term impact” of their roster — because the people in this front office has an excellent track record of making the right moves. They have done nothing much wrong yet.
And while some fans — and media members — are going to get all wired up if they fail to address the positions they feel should be fortified — they would be better served to think first — to think long and hard — before they do anything silly, or unwarranted.
Yes, think about the offseason after the 2017 season, when the Browns were coming off a year in which they were perfectly imperfect at 0-16 and had so many holes in their roster, including the biggest one at quarterback — that it looked like swiss cheese, making for a situation that was exceedingly bleak. Now, three offseasons later, the Browns, by almost all accounts, have one of the best rosters — on paper, at least, in the NFL.
If that kind of improvement continues, then the Browns have a great chance to get to where they want to go, and that is accepting the Lombardi Trophy as winners of the Super Bowl.
As such, fans need to be open to anything happening on that first day of the draft on Thursday night. These guys know this team inside and out, and they have earned our patience, and respect.
Sound like a plan?
Yeah, I think so, too.
