Pettine admitted what we’ve known for a long, long time

It is hardly a surprise that, as head coach Mike Pettine pointed out Monday, there is dysfunction, tension, selfishness and a lack of cohesiveness present inside Browns Headquarters. We’ve been telling you that here for quite some time now.

Pettine and General Manager Ray Farmer haven’t gotten along since Textgate reared its ugly head. And who can blame Pettine for continuing to be upset that his GM tried to usurp his authority on the sideline during games?

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is not happy with either man for the way they have botched draft picks and personnel moves, and with the fact they can’t get along with each other. It’s a mess and he’s fed up that his top two football men – and two high-salaried employees – are incompetent and incompatible. That’s a bad combination.

The Browns are 2-10 and have lost seven straight, so Haslam has to be wondering what he’s paying for, and rightfully so.

That’s why, even if Haslam wanted to bring Pettine and Farmer back next year – and I don’t believe he wants to in any way, shape or form – he absolutely can’t do it. There needs to be a housecleaning from ceiling to cellar. It’s obvious. It’s not a debatable point.

But again, we have known all this for a while. The fact that Pettine admitted it is a story, I guess, but it’s not earthshaking and no one should be surprised.

That it exists is sad and disappointing. Browns fans deserve so much better from their football team.
