We had it all figured out.
Or so we thought.
We presumed that Cody Kessler was going to open the season as the Browns’ starting quarterback.
We presumed that if it weren’t Kessler for whatever reason, then the starter would be rookie DeShone Kizer.
And we presumed that no matter what happened, Brock Osweiler had no chance to be the starter – actually, perhaps no chance to even be on the team come training camp.
But presume is just a fancy word for assume, and you what happens when you assume.
It happened in this instance, with Kessler playing his way out of the starting job and Kizer deemed not yet ready to be the guy. That left Osweiler under center, beginning with Thursday night’s preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Now we’re presuming that Osweiler will keep the job for only a while before it is turned over to Kizer sometime this season.
We may well end up having presumed correctly on that one. In fact, the likelihood of it occurring is overwhelming.
But what if we are all wrong – yet again?
That is, what happens if Osweiler and the Browns both play lights out? What if Osweiler is having a season like Brian Sipe did in 1980 and the Browns are in contention after the weather turns cold? What if the quarterback and the team are the two biggest stories in the NFL?
What do the Browns do then? Do they still pull the plug on Osweiler and insert Kizer at some point, say in the middle of the year?
Those are all interesting questions, but, as mentioned, these scenarios probably won’t come close to playing out. What if they did, though? They could, you know. Stranger things have happened.
Have the Browns thought about that? Hopefully, they have. And if that’s the case, then I hope they have a plan of action ready to be implemented.
Whether it’s sports or otherwise, we want things in this life to work out like we think they will. It makes it easier. But it doesn’t have to be easy. It can be – and oftentimes is — complicated and unexpected.
Sometimes, there is a person who comes in through the back door and steals the show.
With that being said, then, could that person be Brock Osweiler?
If it is, what a story that will be. Browns fans would be happy to have egg on their faces if it means their team turns in a strong performance and is relevant – and fun to watch — again.
