One simple question, but a very important and defining one

Is bigger better?

Indeed, is bigger really better?

That is the question – in more ways than one –the Browns have been asking themselves for a long time already, and will continue to ask themselves over the next month and two days leading up to the opening night of the NFL Draft on April 28. What quarterback, Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, should they take with the No. 2 overall pick?

Jared Goff played in a Power 5 conference at Cal. He went against teams like Stanford, USC, Utah and Oregon.

Carson Wentz played at off-the-beaten-path North Dakota State against the best of the FCS, such as Youngstown State, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa and Illinois State.

Goff played on a big stage in front of a lot of big crowds in the Pac-12. The Golden Bears’ league opener, at home against Washington, drew 61,066. Their non-league contest at Texas attracted 91,568.

Wentz played on a small stage in front of a lot of small crowds. There was a stadium-record crowd of 21,836 when the host Bison won its fifth consecutive FCS championship with a 37-10 wipeout of Jacksonville State last season.

Wentz is 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds, which makes him the same height, and four pounds lighter, than Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and an inch shorter and eight pounds lighter than the Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco (6-6, 245).

Goff is 6-4 and a much-lankier 215 pounds, making him the same height, and three pounds lighter, than Browns quarterback Josh McCown (6-4, 218).

A lot of different things will go into the Browns’ determinations about Wentz and Goff, but ultimately, it will come down to that question and the many different ways it is being asked. Without a doubt, when we think back to this draft five years from now or 25 years from now, it is the question we will remember.

That is, is bigger really better?

It will be incumbent upon the Browns, most notably head coach Hue Jackson and his top two offensive assistants in Pep Hamilton and Al Saunders, to sort it all out and get it right – not just kind of right or close to being right, but squarely-in the-middle-of-the-bulls eye right. Their success in doing that will make or break the Browns going forward in the near future, and their own coaching tenures in Cleveland.
