One of the most historic events in pro football history – Tech-nically speaking about the draft

That the NFL Draft will be conducted virtually makes it one of the most historic events in pro football history.
It also opens a whole new series of questions, issues and concerns.

Things won’t be the same, obviously, but in another even more important aspect, will the all-important end-result continue to be the same? That is, will the teams that traditionally do well in the draft in terms of their efficiency, and those that don’t, continue to perform at those levels? Will the draft efficiency of teams rise or fall because of the tech aptitude – or lack thereof — of the people conducting their drafts?
No one knows, because the league has never been through anything like this. So, then, your guess is as good as mine.
Here’s what I think:
I firmly believe that the tech-savvy teams will have a huge advantage when it comes to that efficiency, Not all teams are tech-savvy. Tech-savviness is, at least partly so but probably a lot more so than that, determined by age. It’s just the way it is. How many of you older people – not old, but just older – are as tech-savvy as your children, or even your grandchildren? I would guess it is not many. They use tech with the same ease that we older folks did when operating record-players, using rotary-dial telephones and doing reports on typewriters.
I would think a team like the Browns, with young people across the board at the top in Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry, Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta and head coach Kevin Stefanski, will perform extremely efficiently. What they lack in terms of experience – a whole lot – they may more than make up for in terms of their ability to operate virtually seamlessly.

But it’s not a given when everything is mixed together. That football knowledge – and the presence of a firm, well-conceived plan and the commitment to not deviate from it, regardless of a temptation to do so – will be big keys as well, certainly. Tech-savviness can’t save teams unable to determine who, and what, they’re looking at.
Something else to consider is whether coaches and GMs like Bill Belichick, who has both of those titles with the New England Patriots, will prosper regardless of the ages of their people. Belichick, who just turned 68 years young, always figures out to do things, to adapt, whether it be devising a defense to stop a productive passing attack, or putting together a good offensive game plan against a standout defense. He is the ultimate chameleon. He morphs his team into whatever it has to be, and do, to win.
Again, though, we don’t know about any of this. What we do know, however, is that it will be incredibly interesting to watch one of the most historic events in pro football history play out in each team’s virtual draft rooms.
That’s a virtual certainty.
