You can’t make this stuff up.
You really can’t.
That’s all you can say about the fact that, just six days from their regular-season opener against the New York Jets, the Browns announced today that they have suspended indefinitely their offensive line coach, Andy Moeller.
The only thing the Browns will say is that the suspension stems from an incident over the weekend that they take “very seriously.”
Moeller has had three alcohol-related incidents in the last eight years. Whether this is No. 4 is anyone’s guess.
Moeller’s father, Gary Moeller, resigned as head coach at Michigan in 1995 after he was arrested for disorderly conduct following an incident at a suburban Detroit restaurant that included an alleged drunken outburst.
Whatever the source of his suspension, it’s a huge embarrassment for both Moeller and the Browns, and comes at a time when the club can least afford it.
For one thing, the offensive line might be the Browns’ biggest strength. They can only hope this upheaval doesn’t serve as a distraction for Sunday’s opener.
In addition, the Browns already have enough regrettable issues of this type with General Manager Ray Farmer today having begun a month-long suspension for his involvement in Textgate.
Again, you can’t make this stuff up, and until it stops happening and the only topic of conversation about the Browns is the play on the field, they will continue to struggle to build a solid organization and a team that can win consistently.
