EDITOR’S NOTE: In honoring the fact that February was Black History Month, we continue with a series on Browns Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Bobby Mitchell.
The offensive numbers were incredible when the Browns outlasted the then Washington Redskins 42-37 on Nov. 26, 1967 at Cleveland Stadium.
Check them out:
*The teams combined to score 70 points. The Browns scored six touchdowns, including four in the first half, and still won by just five points and couldn’t seal the deal until the last play.
*The Browns amassed 424 total net yards, while Washington had 57 more, 481.
*Washington’s Sonny Jurgensen completed 32 of 50 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. The Browns sacked him five times for 45 yards in losses and still couldn’t slow him down much. He just kept firing away.
*Wide receiver Charley Taylor had 11 receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while the other wideout, Bobby Mitchell, grabbed six passes for 106 yards and a score. Running back A.D. Whitfield added eight catches for 102 yards. Tight end Jerry Smith added four receptions for 63 yards.
*The Browns countered by rushing for 203 yards and two TDs, both by Leroy Kelly, who averaged just over eight yards a carry by gaining 163 in 20 attempts. He looked a lot like Jim Brown, the player who proceeded him.
Browns wide receiver Paul Warfield had three catches for 96 yards, averaging 32 yards a reception, and his running mate, Gary Collins, averaged almost 20 on three grabs for 58 yards.
Overall, that’s a lot, enough to make the statisticians dizzy.
It was a sign of things to come.
