IT’S NO TIME FOR BROWNS TO BE SILLY

This is silly season, as former Browns General Manager Phil Savage so aptly put it a decade ago.

The NFL Draft is approaching – it’s less than two months away now – and because of the high stakes involved, anybody will say just about anything about anybody or anything anywhere at any time.

In blunt terms, it’s called telling a lie – perhaps only a little one or a white one, but still a lie nonetheless. For those who like political correctness, it’s called political correctness. Either way, it’s said to deceive and throw people off the trail of what the truth is.

So, with that having been said, then, to hear and read that, “according to sources,” the Browns are considering taking quarterback Mitch Trubisky, a Mentor High School and University of North Carolina product, with their No. 1 overall pick is both alarming and, at the same time, par for the course in this silliest of seasons.

There are no franchise quarterbacks in this draft. And there’s certainly not one worth selecting at No. 1. There just aren’t. Common sense tells you that. The eye test tells you that.

As such, I would be absolutely stunned if the Browns took Trubisky or any other quarterback at No. 1. Actually, I’d be more than absolutely stunned, if that’s possible.

Yes, the Browns desperately need a quarterback. They have since the expansion era started in 1999. Their failure to get one is why they’ve had losing records in 16 of their 18 seasons, including nine in a row. Since quarterback is the most important position in team sports, their complete rebuilding effort really doesn’t begin to take shape until they get a good, young passer.

Even with that, though, they can’t waste their top pick on a quarterback. There’s just no value there. It would be … well, silly to do so.

Instead, it should be used to fill any of the other numerous holes they have, such as in the defensive front seven, where there are players worthy of being No. 1. It would be a good value to get one of those guys.

But which one?

Ah, now that’s a good question, one we will try to answer in our next post.
