When a team can’t win, then it’s no fun.
But, when a team can’t win and also can’t score, then it’s even worse — a whole lot worse, in fact — for whether it’s football, field hockey or frisbee, or baseball, badminton or backgammon, fans want to see the scoreboard lit up.
The Browns found that out last season when, during their 3-14 finish, they were reduced to celebrating first downs. It was hard to watch for a variety of reasons.
And the Guardians are finding that out now. Since the beginning of June, their losses have gone way up as their run scoring has gone way down.
Although the Guardians are an organization that always seems to figure it out, if things don’t change quickly, and dramatically, then we’ll go back to the old days around here and, as the MLB All-Star Game approaches, people will begin looking forward to the start of Browns training camp.
The Browns have to be mindful of that. They are likely going to struggle to string wins together this season, so they have to at least find a way to score points and make their games entertaining. To do that, of course, they absolutely have to get their quarterback situation right.
Quarterback is always the position that even casual fans pay attention to, and it will be even more the case this year.
We’ll see if head coach Kevin Stefanski is up to the challenge.
