As we said on Tuesday, the “naming” of Robert Griffin III as Browns starting quarterback wasn’t really news.
That’s because it wasn’t really a “naming” at all in the truest sense, but rather an official affirmation of something that had been incredibly obvious for six months, since he was signed in free agency in March after being recruited here personally by head coach Hue Jackson.
But there was some actual news that came out of that pronouncement on Monday, and it was every good indeed. It is that, according to Jackson, it appears that there will be no quick hook for Griffin, no revolving door at the position. He doesn’t have to be looking over his shoulder.
Jackson was asked Monday about his comment that, “I think you make a decision, you stick by it,” and if it meant that the Browns wouldn’t be re-evaluating the quarterback position as the season goes along.
“Unless there is a reason to. I don’t see any reason to right now,” Jackson said. “When I make a choice, I make a choice and I stand behind it.
“My job is to create the right environment for him to be the best he can be, along with the rest of our coaches. That’s what we’re committed to.
“Now, he has to do the work, but we’ve made a commitment to him and he has to go make it right.”
To be sure, the leash on Griffin is not forever, but at the same time, it’s not short, either. And that is as it should be.
Especially with what he went through with the Washington Redskins the last several years, being humiliated to the point that he lost his confidence altogether, the last thing Griffin needs is to be worried about getting pulled if things starting going badly.
What he needs is just to be able to go out and play and concentrate on the task at hand. That’s good for him – it gives him the best chance to succeed – and as such it’s good for the offense and good for the team overall.
Jackson knows that. He knows that better than anyone in Cleveland, because he understands the quarterback position as well as anyone in the game.
That the Browns finally have a head coach like that is … well, good news.
