NO QUARTERBACK EQUALS NO CHANCE
By STEVE KING
The frequent readers of brownsdailydose.com know what the No. 1 axiom of this site is when it comes to having successful pro football teams, whether it’s the Browns or any of the other 31 franchises.
That is, above all else, when a team has a good quarterback, then it has a good chance, and when it doesn’t, then it doesn’t, And the better the quarterback, the better the chance.
It is no more complicated than that. It really, truly isn’t.
History tells us so.
All the great teams over an extended period — especially the dynasties, the best of the best — great quarterbacks. That’s the No. 1 reason why they were great, are great and will continue to be great.
The Browns’ arch rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be less than what they have been for two decades because their iconic quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, has retired.
Like it or not and agree with the surrounding circumstances or not, the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson — giving up the farm, specifically three first-round NFL Draft picks — because they thought they needed a big upgrade at quarterback if they wanted to contend for a Super Bowl championship.
We say all this because Dan Campbell, the second-year head coach of the NFL team in The State Up North, the Detroit Lions, said the other day that his club doesn’t need an elite quarterback for “sustained success.”
Ugh!
Double-ugh!!
Triple-ugh!!!
The Lions don’t have anything close to an elite quarterback in Jared Goff.
Let me be clear in saying I like Campbell, I like him a lot, in fact, and since I have a lot of friends who live in the Detroit area and are Lions fans, I really want to see him turn the team around.
But there’s no way that he, or any other coach, will get the Lions on track and become a consistent, winning, contending team without a good quarterback.
How do we know this?
Because, again, history tells us so, and history doesn’t lie.
Lions had a great QB. He just won a super bowl, but never with the lions.
Which proves until you have a great team there is no need for a great QB.
