NO EQUALITY, NO WORK

By STEVE KING

What if Browns players – and for that matter, Indians players – did what Detroit Lions players did the other day?

Or what players from some Major League Baseball clubs, and NBA teams, did on Wednesday?

That is, what if Browns players – and, again, also those from the Indians – called off work to bring more attention to the racial inequality going on in this country?

That’s what Lions players did by refusing to practice.

That’s what players from some MLB clubs did by refusing to play regular-season games.

And that’s what players from some NBA teams did by refusing to play postseason games?

I think Browns players would be met with unqualified support. General Manager Andrew Berry is, of course, African-American, and head coach Kevin Stefanski is forward-thinking and progressive. In addition, owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam are more forward-thinking and progressive than for which they’re given credit.

I was too young – and too dumb and too cocky – to really pay much, if any, attention to it at the time, but an old guy told me once years ago, “If you follow the trail of money, it will lead you to the answer of almost everything in life.” Now, a lot older, a little wiser and having had the cockiness beaten out of me, I see exactly what he was saying. And that is what was happening here with these teams. They were choking off the money stream to get attention. Although the Lions didn’t nix a game, to blow off a practice in a training camp in which there were already not nearly enough practices to get ready for the start of the regular season, they, too were choking off the money stream by threatening the quality of play that will be exhibited on the opening weekend.

And to be honest, I hope the Browns – the team that permanently broke the color barrier in all of pro sports in 1946 – do it. I hope they skip a practice.

Go for it, guys.
