For whatever reason, Nick Sirianni doesn’t get anywhere close to the praise he deserves.

The fifth-year head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, who host the Browns on Saturday afternoon in the second preseason game, is one of the top men in his craft in the NFL. The former Mount Union wide receiver has an outstanding 48-20 career regular season record and is, of course, coming off a year in which he guided the Eagles to a Super Bowl title with a rousing 40-22 wipeout of the two-time defending world champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Sirianni has taken the Eagles to the playoffs in each of his previous four seasons after taking over a team that finished just 4-11-1 in 2020 under former Browns quarterback Doug Petersen.
He got them to the Super Bowl in only his second season, losing a 38-35 nail-biter to the Chiefs.
His 2023 team was 11-6, a two-win drop-off from the year before, and was routed 32-9 to Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card playoff round. That put Sirianni on the semi-hot seat in Philadelphia, where the bar is set high, and it then increased to just hot, if not white-hot, when the Eagles began last season with a lackluster 2-2 mark after they got whipped again by the Bucs 32-9 in the rematch.
At the moment of truth, with his professional livelihood on the line, Sirianni fought himself out of it with flying colors as the Eagles won their next 10 games on the way to a 14-3 regular-season finish. Then he put an exclamation point to it all by winning four straight postseason games to earn the title. They finished with a real flourish, as, including their 55-23 beatdown of the division rival Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, they outscored their last two playoff foes by a whopping 50 points, 95-45.
Now, compare that to what Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has done in five seasons, with three losing records, including 2024’s disgusting 3-14, and two playoff berths — as a wild card — with but one postseason victory, and add to it to the fact he has never appeared to be on the hot seat, or even a lukewarm seat. And did we also point out that while Sirianni’s team is favored by many to respeat as Super Bowl champion this season, Stefanski’s guys are predicted to go 3-14 —2-15 if you believe the writers at SportsIllustrated.com — and if it does indeed go south that badly, you can bet that Stefanski will still not come under any scrutiny, at least by owner Jimmy Haslam.
Browns fans wish their owner would care just 25 percent as much as the owner of the Eagles, Jeffrey Lurie.

Nick Sirianni’s Mount Union Roots
Before Nick Sirianni was patrolling NFL sidelines and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl title, he was carving out a reputation for toughness and leadership at Mount Union College, the Division III powerhouse in Alliance, Ohio.
A native of Jamestown, New York, Sirianni arrived at Mount Union in the late 1990s and played wide receiver for head coach Larry Kehres, one of the winningest coaches in college football history. While his career was hampered by a serious calf injury and compartment syndrome, Sirianni’s grit was undeniable. He battled through the setbacks to become a reliable target in the Purple Raiders’ high-powered offense.
Sirianni was part of a dynasty. During his time at Mount Union, the Purple Raiders were in the middle of their run of national dominance, piling up NCAA Division III national championships and perfect seasons. The program’s demanding culture — where preparation, discipline, and accountability were non-negotiable — left a lasting impact on Sirianni.
Though he wasn’t a star player, Sirianni absorbed the winning habits that defined Mount Union. He often credits Kehres and his time in Alliance with shaping his coaching philosophy: attention to detail, relentless competitiveness, and building strong relationships with players.
That foundation has carried him through every step of his career — from a small-college assistant to an NFL head coach — and it helps explain why Sirianni, even under pressure in Philadelphia, finds ways to rally his team.
