The NFL at long last has named its individual rushing title for Jim Brown.

Well, it’s about time!

What in the world took the league so long? The Pro Football Hall of Fame running back from the Browns retired nearly 60 years ago.

Brown, who led the league in rushing in eight of the nine seasons he played from 1957-65, is not just the greatest running back of all-time but also the greatest player overall. He just is. It’s not even debatable.

Greatness is measured not by some silly, misguided wondering if a long-ago player who could play now. Rather, it’s measured by how a player stacked up against his peers, his contemporaries. And when you do that, Brown, whose rushing totals look like something out of a video game compared to what else was going on in the game back then, was further ahead than any player at any position in any other era.

Congratulations to Jim Brown. It is well-deserved and long overdue.

And a happy birthday to him, too. He turned 87 on Friday.
