A new Mayfield women’s movement
By Steve King
There are a lot of people happy that the Browns took quarterback Baker Mayfield with he No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft last Thursday night.
And their opinions are coming out more and more as the days go on. I’m sure that will continue.
But not everyone is happy. A lot of people are unhappy – really unhappy. That’s obvious.
And as the days go on, their voices have not quieted one bit.
Take, for instance, my gal pal Val, a woman I’ve referenced before on this site. She really knows football. And she thinks what she thinks. When she forms an opinion, she doesn’t come off it.
Ever.
For any reason.
Stubborn?
No, not really. That’s unfair. I’d say more like confident in her understanding of the game and, in being a life-long Browns fan, what they need to get back on track.
I can appreciate it. No wishy-washy stuff for this lady. It’s one of the reasons I’ve been longtime friends with her.
She kept saying over and over and over as the draft approached and the possibility of Mayfield being picked No. 1 started surfacing and gaining some real traction, that if the Browns actually did it, she would cease bring a fan.
And so far, she has.
I texted her right after the pick was made, and she quickly responded, “Not my team. Not my draft. Don’t care.”
I could feel her anger through my iPhone.
And in subsequent texts and conversations, the anger has remained.
In fact, when she returned home from visiting two elderly friends of the family in a nursing home the other day, she called me and said, without first saying hello, “The senior citizens hate the stupid pick, too.”
It’s not a good thing to tick off the senior citizens. Just like Val, they aren’t changing their minds.
Not now at least.
What could change those ladies’ minds, and Val’s mind as well, though?
We know it’s not about a Mayfield women’s movement. It is about winning games and eventually championships. It’s always about winning. Period.
Until that happens, however, it will be ugly.
Not the women – mind you, not at all, please! – but rather just their opinions.
