This could be the last chance for quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Not just this season with the Browns.
But for every season going forward for any team in any pro football league.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson took a chance on RG3 when he engineered his signing as a free agent in the offseason.
It seemed a good match.
The Browns were desperate for a quarterback.
And RG3 was desperate for a job.
But there was one catch, and we mentioned that here again and again and again way back when. It is that if RG3 could not make it with the needy, struggling Browns, then it’s a good bet that he couldn’t make it with anyone.
Now here it is near the end of the season and, mostly because of a shoulder injury but also because of ineffective play, RG3 has proved nothing to the Browns. He has two games left to do it – perhaps. Jackson has hinted that if RG3 sputters on Saturday against the San Diego Chargers in the home finale, then he might go to rookie Cody Kessler before the afternoon is done.
Since Kessler has proved wanting as well this season in much more extended time, a move to him would not be as much a statement about Kessler as it would be about RG3. It could be the end of the line.
For good.
So while there is nothing else at stake for the rest of the Browns other than inching closer to a winless season, RG3 would be wide to treat Saturday’s game like the Super Bowl of all Super Bowls. His football career could well depend on it.
