WHY IT MIGHT BE WISE TO STICK WITH RG3

Robert Griffin III is the answer for the Browns at quarterback going forward, or at least he should be given strong consideration for such.

But not necessarily as the franchise guy. Rather, we’re talking about him being the bridge to the franchise guy.

It doesn’t appear that there is a quarterback in the 2017 NFL draft who can come in next season and be worthy of being proclaimed the starter – that franchise guy – right away. There might not be a franchise quarterback in the draft even if a team has to sit back and wait for him to develop. This could change, certainly, but the talent at the positon appears to be that thin. It’s just one of those years.

So with that being the case, the Browns are going to have to find someone who can quarterback for most, if not all, of 2017. There are not enough good quarterbacks in the NFL as it is for every team to have one. In fact, many teams do not have a quarterback worthy of being labeled “the guy.” For that matter, a lot of the present starters in the league are not worthy of being considered even a bridge to “the guy.”

It doesn’t stand to reason, then, that the Browns are going to be able to find their guy, or even one to be a bridge to the guy, sitting on another club’s roster in the offseason.

Thus, what’s wrong in bringing back a healthy RG3 to be the bridge in 2017? He knows the system, coaches, players and organization. He would have an offseason to get stronger and to continue to shake off the rust from not having played much the last two seasons. And he would be only 27 years old, a time when many players, especially at quarterback, go into the prime of their careers.

Is his health – or lack thereof – a concern? Sure, it is. It’s been a concern for much of his career, in fact.

But unless something unforeseen happens, it doesn’t seem as if anyone better – and perhaps not even as good – as RG3 will be on the veteran free-agent market.

It’s something for the Browns to think about, and they will be thinking about it – that is, the quarterback situation overall – a lot in the offseason.
