Looking at Mike McCarthy for the head coaching spot in Cleveland

On the surface, former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is an interesting, and deserving, candidate, should he decide to pursue it, for the same job with the Browns.

What he did with the Packers makes him one of the most successful head coaches of this, or any other, era in pro football history.

The Browns would be foolish not to be looking at Mike McCarthy, and they will certainly do so. After all, Cleveland General Manager John Dorsey has a lot of the Green Bay organization, and McCarthy, as part of his professional DNA.

But sports coaches have a shelf-life, and that’s especially true in football, where the game is ever-changing, not just by the decade but, really, almost by the year and even month. Indeed, what was in vogue as recently as three or four years ago, particularly when it comes to offensive schemes, is ancient history now.

So, then, the kind of football McCarthy coached three decades ago when he got into the game, and especially 25 years ago when he entered the NFL, is not the football that’s being played now. It’s not even close. It’s almost like two different games.

With that, McCarthy has had to adjust to stay in the game and be successful. But has he adjusted enough in recent years?

He was, after all, fired by the Packers, and it was not pretty. His disagreements with future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers were no secret, and more is coming out about their dysfunctional relationship with each passing day.

Was it McCarthy’s fault? Or was it the fault of Rodgers, who can be extremely difficult?

Or, more probably, was it the fault of both men in that there are always two sides to every story?

Whatever the case, that relationship no longer worked, and that was causing the Packers to no longer work as a successful team, or organization.

It is the Packers’ problem to figure it out and fix it, and it is up to the Browns to figure it out as well for their own situation.

More on that in my next post.
