That Familiar Voice: Brian Schottenheimer and Memories of Marty
I heard a radio interview of first-year Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer the other day, and as I listened, something suddenly dawned on me.
That is, he sounds a whole heckuva lot like his dad, the late, great Marty Schottenheimer, the head coach of the Browns for last half of the 1980s who guided the team to its last sustained period of success. That realization — that thought — made me smile. Those were good times indeed.

Look, I know Brian, in his first head-coaching opportunity at any level, may well be in a tough situation. He has to work with, and try to please, his impetuous owner, Jerry Jones, which is no small task. Have you ever seen the movie, “Monster-In-Law?” It may be a no-win situation.
And oh, yes, there’s that little trade recently in which the Cowboys appeared for all the world to have gotten fleeced in sending standout linebacker/edge rusher Micah Parsons to conference rival Green Bay. How does Schottenheimer and his defensive coaches make up for the loss of one of the NFL’s best players? We’ll find out beginning Thursday night when the Cowboys go to Philadelphia and take on the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles in the league’s first regular-season game of the year.
Nonetheless, I am going to root —hard — for Schottenheimer. The fact he comes from good stock will give him a fighting chance not just in the opener, but also throughout the season.
“There’s a gleam, men. There’s a gleam. Let’s get the gleam.” Marty told the Browns before the 1986 AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos.”
Here’s hoping his son’s Dallas Cowboys get it.
