Landry and Beckham are very different
I guess opposites really do attract.
That’s the case at least when it comes to former Browns wide receivers — and still best friends — Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr.
Landry, who was released by the Browns on Monday when he and his representatives were unable to find a trade partner, was the consummate pro. It was always all about the team and never about him. He became one of the leaders of the club — and the undisputed leader of the wide receivers room — from the moment he came to Cleveland. With his efforts on the field — he was a Pro Bowler — and off it, he showed a bunch of young and inexperienced players how it should be done, how they should go about their work.
With that, then, he was a godsend to the Browns. He was worth much more to them than they could ever pay him.
Conversely, Beckham, who was released last season, was always all about him and never about the team. Drama followed him everywhere. There was hardly a day that went by in which there was no news about Beckham. It was always something. Indeed, there was never a dull moment, and never, really, a good moment — or at least not many of them.
In that way, then, he became, certainly, a constant distraction and, even more than that, a cancer. There were 52 other players, and then there was Beckham and his “too-cool-for-school” attitude.
Even with his abundance of talent, it wasn’t worth — he wasn’t worth — all the headaches. He just wasn’t. The Browns are better off without him.
Odell Beckham Jr. went off to the Los Angeles Rams and won a Super Bowl. Good for him.
I hope for at least that — and even more, much more, in fact — for Jarvis Landry going forward.
