The last time the Browns had played Miami 10 months ago, they had let one get away.
It was a big one – a 24-21 loss to the Dolphins in the 1985 AFC divisional playoffs after they had led 21-3 in the second quarter – making it just that much more painful.
Now the Browns had a chance to get some revenge.
And, 29 years ago today, on Nov. 10, 1986, they took full advantage of it.
Bernie Kosar passed for 401 yards, still tied for the fifth-most in franchise history, the offense amassed 558 total yards, also the second-highest ever, and Matt Bahr kicked four field goals as the Browns beat the Dolphins 26-16 before 77,949 fans at Cleveland Stadium and a national TV audience on Monday Night Football.
The win, the Browns’ third in a row, improved their record to 7-3 and put them into first place all by themselves in the Central Division.
Cleveland led 16-10 at halftime on Bahr’s first three field goals of 32, 19 and 18 yards, and an 18-yard touchdown run by backup tight end Harry Holt on an end-around.
The lead went to 26-10 in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard scoring run by Curtis Dickey, who had 92 yards rushing in 15 carries, and Bahr’s last field goal, a 21-yarder. And this time, the Browns stayed ahead.
Kosar completed 32 of 50 passing attempts with no touchdowns and interceptions.
Tight end Ozzie Newsome and running back Kevin Mack both had 94 yards receiving with seven and six catches, respectively. Dickey added five catches for 40 yards. Running back Herman Fontenot (55 yards) and wide receiver Reggie Langhorne (47) both had four receptions.
