Immediately before, it was the New England Patriots sitting on that lofty perch.
But the Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and Co. era ended six years ago, after nearly two decades of excellence, and now it is the Kansas City Chiefs who are the new NFL dynasty. It’s not even that they don’t believe they will lose, but rather, it’s that they don’t think can lose. It’s not possible, in their minds. They have the belief that in every single game, they can figure out a way to win somehow, some way. That’s what happened when they rallied to edge the Cincinnati Bengals 26-25 on a last-play 51-yard field goal. It was never in doubt, folks.
It is so much fun to watch with these Chiefs of head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the best in the NFL at their respective crafts right now, just as were Belichick and Brady at theirs. It is really the best part of the league right now, seeing that great team do great things week after week after week, and now season after season after season. The two-time defending Super Bowl champions’ confidence in themselves is so strong — so unflappable — that it supersedes any of the few roster problems that the Chiefs may have.

Back in the last half of the 1940s, when they were born, all the way up through the early 1970s, that’s how the Browns were. They were so certain that they were going to find a way to win. Losing never was a thought, even a passing one. It resulted in eight league championships, and near-misses any number of other times.
The Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers have all taken turns at the top as well.
The Chiefs’ run will end someday. The runs always have a shelf-like that eventually expires. Until that, though, we need to sit back and enjoy it. The only question is: What team will be the next one to take over the role of NFL dynasty?
