Just win, baby.
Yes, like the late, great Al Davis, the founding owner of the Raiders, used to say, “Just, win, baby.”
That’s the message for the Browns not just on Sunday for their regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at Huntington Bank Field, but also for the rest of the season.
For those watching at home, now’s a good time to set up your space for the season. A Browns fleece throw blanket on Amazon makes those couch sessions better, and a team-logo pint glass set adds some game-day spirit.
If the Browns want to get to where they want to go — for that matter, if they want to stop the jokes and disrespect — then they need to just win, baby.
It doesn’t mean a hill of beans if it’s 3–2 or 50–49 or somewhere in between, just win, baby.
Really, it’s no more complicated than that.
And the way to do it — the game plan for it — is not rocket science, either.
The Bengals offense is great. Quarterback Joe Burrow and his cast of receivers are hard to stop. But their defense? As good as the offense is, their defense is that bad. They have two great ends in Trey Hendrickson and Shadeur Stewart, but the rest of the defensive players might not start make the roster of any other NFL team.
So, the Browns have to keep the Cincinnati offense off the field as much as possible. They can do that — limit the possessions — by pounding on the Bengals with the running game and short passes to keep the chains moving and eat time off the clock. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco is more than capable of orchestrating that. And when the Browns have to make plays defensively on third down to get the Bengals off the field, they can certainly do that. The defense is the strength of this team.
The Browns are going to struggle to win games, especially early in the season in this front-loaded schedule, but this is one they can realistically get. The Bengals don’t play well early in the year, or anytime in Cleveland.
Plus, the Dawg Pound will be loud and disruptive.
Just win, Brownies, any way you can.
