We in Cleveland have been talking about the 2018 NFL Draft for a while now, which is what happens when the hometown team, in this case, the Browns, are 0-10 this season after going 1-15 last year.
Unless something unbelievable happens – which is entirely possible, as proven by the events of this expansion era – the Browns will have the No. 1 overall pick and will take a quarterback.
But which quarterback? That’s the real question.
And what will the Browns do with their second pick of the first round, which they got in a trade from the Houston Texans? Right now, it is the No. 13 overall selection.
There are all kinds of people – the so-called “experts – giving their best projections.
Here’s what Brad Weiss, a pretty good writer, from fansided.com. a pretty good website, had to say a few days in his latest mock draft:
“The 2018 NFL Draft is currently five months away, but it is never too early to think about what the draft might actually look like. Heading into Week 12 of the NFL season, the Cleveland Browns are still looking for their first win, and are likely headed towards the No. 1 pick in the draft for the second straight year. The San Francisco 49ers have been just as terrible, as have the New York Giants, but Cleveland remains the only winless team in the league.
“As we inch towards the playoffs, teams have started to distinguish themselves as the haves, and the have-nots. There is still a lot of football left to play this season, but you are beginning to see needs become more and more prevalent as the weeks go by. With that said, it is time to take a gander at what players might be headed where next April.
“Here is a look at our latest 2018 NFL Mock Draft.
“Another week, another loss for the Cleveland Browns, who are finding new ways to lose this season. On Sunday, they actually had a chance to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, as their defense played well, but a Jags defensive touchdown sealed the deal in the fourth quarter. Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer has struggled mightily under center, and with the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Browns should look to bring in someone they can call the future.
“Kizer is not a bad quarterback, but he is playing with limited weapons, and star offensive tackle Joe Thomas is done for the season. The real issue is he is not ready to be a starter in the NFL, though I am sure in time he may be able to be a serviceable signal-caller in the league. However, this Browns franchise does not have that kind of time, and it the front office has to get it right picking first overall.
“With that pick, the Browns should look to select UCLA’s Josh Rosen, who outplayed USC’s Sam Darnold when the two met up last week in a huge Pac-12 matchup. Rosen just has the look of a starting NFL quarterback, and while he makes mistakes, he is not as turnover-prone as Darnold is at this point. Both of these players may wind up being elite quarterbacks in the league one day, but it looks like Rosen has the leg up on Darnold right now.
“The Browns will pick twice during the first round in April, as they made a trade with the Houston Texans during the 2017 NFL Draft. That trade ended up being Deshaun Watson, whom the Texans took with the pick they received from Cleveland. Watson will certainly be a star quarterback, as he showed brilliance before he got hurt this season, so the Browns have to be thinking they missed out on another franchise quarterback.
“When it comes time for them to pick their second of two first round picks, they should look to get better on defense. It is likely they select a quarterback first overall, and while they selected a safety in the first round in 2017, they should bring in another safety this upcoming April. Defensive back Derwin James of Florida State is regarded by many as the best athlete in this draft class on defense, and would be a nice grab for the Browns this late in round one.
“James has dealt with injuries during his time at Florida State, but has been a premier player for the Seminoles this season. Florida State has been terrible as a unit, but that has not stopped James from producing at a high level. The Browns could pair James with Jabrill Peppers at the two safety positions, giving them two young, stud defensive backs in the middle of their secondary.”
