To the surprise of absolutely no one in the free-speaking world, Jim Schwartz has resigned as defensive coordinator of the Browns.

Is this breaking news?
Hardly. It is as much breaking news as the traffic light at the nearest intersection to you turning red and green and yellow.
This was going to happen the moment the Browns passed Schwartz over in their head-coaching search for Todd Monken. He was upset, and rightfully so, because he really wanted a job.

But he didn’t get it, and so he had to move on and the Browns had to move on. It is best for everybody involved that he is no longer here. And that hurts me a great deal to say that, because he’s a popular guy and he did one whale of a job for the last three seasons building the Browns defense in one of the NFL‘s best, if not the best.
He can go and do what he needs to do, what he wants to do, whatever that is, whatever he can legally do, considering the fact that Browns still hold his rights. But if I were the Browns, I would do everything I could to relinquish those rights and let him walk. He deserves that, just as the Browns deserve the chance to hire the coordinator that the new head coach wants.
And, if you listen to the people in the know, this Browns defensive coordinator job is one that is going to attract a lot of good candidates. Who wouldn’t want to coach this defense? The Browns don’t have to take just anybody, for they can be selective. They can be picky.
Just as Schwartz needs to do what is best for him, the Browns need to do what’s best for themselves. In fact, you know fill well they’ve been working on this for several days now when it became apparent that Schwartz was not going to stay here. They have probably done a lot of back-channel interviews already on this very topic
None of that, though, is breaking news, and it’s something that needs to be repeated over and over and over again as media sources try to have a stop-the-presses moment when in fact, this has been the freight train that has been chugging on down the tracks, bearing down on the Browns, for about a week now.
Who would you like to see be the coordinator of the Browns? Who do you think will get the job?
Those are the questions we need to be asking now, for what happens on that is breaking news, not some news outlet’s silly idea of what it is.
