Jim Donovan making this season even more incredible

Making the rounds on the Internet is a clip of the radio booth at Cleveland Browns Stadium last Sunday as longtime play-by-play announcer Jim Donovan calls the last play of the 20–17 victory over the Chicago Bears.

You know, the Hail Mary play, the one that gave everybody in Northeast Ohio a heart attack for a moment when a Bears receiver caught the ball for a split-second, only to have it bounce out of his hands and into those of a Cleveland defender to seal the deal? Yeah, that play.

If you haven’t seen it, then you must look it up and watch it. It is well worth your time. It is must-see viewing.

And if you’ve watched it already, and haven’t laughed, cried, gasped and screamed – perhsps even all at the same time – – then you had better check and see if you’ve got a pulse.

Donovan is in his 25th season of calling Browns games. I think he’s the best play-by-play man in the NFL. If not, then he’s certainly on the list of those being considered. He is truly a treasure, a man whose words are the heartbeat of Browns football.

His health issues are well-documented, and we don’t need to go there again, but his return to the booth has made this incredible season even more so.

It’s your favorite ice cream, and then sticking your favorite topping on it. It just can’t get much better than that.

This season would still be incredible, but it would be less so if somebody else were calling the games, as was the case when Donovan took a respite to focus on his health.

But the fact that he is here should give Browns fans goosebumps, because you have the best man calling these games, telling you what’s going on, and doing so in a way that you can understand because he is just as excited and invested as you are.

Thank you and God bless you, Jim Donovan, for all you do for this football community, and for all you will do not just for the rest of this season but also for years to come. You are a Cleveland Browns Legend in every way, shape and form.
