The Browns and Guardians have one big thing in common in that they both struggle offensively.
But the Guardians have found a way to work around it. They develop young pitchers. It carries them. It’s why they have just won their second straight American League Central Division championship, and 13th overall.
The Browns have not found a way to work around it. It’s why, following Sunday’s 34-10 blowout loss to the Detroit Lions, they are 1-3 and may well be headed to double-digit losses for a second straight season and the third time in four years.
The way out of that mess is for the Browns to develop a young arm of their own.
So, with that having been said, it’s time for that process to begin.
That is, it’s time to change quarterbacks and insert rookie Dillon Gabriel for veteran Joe Flacco.
There, I said it.
The Browns offense is really messed up, dysfunctional and ineffective. It’s not all Flacco’s fault, of course. In fact, there are a lot of other people who have a hand in this mediocrity as well.
Quarterback, though, is the most important position in team sports, and so the easiest way to fix your problem is by starting at the top.
It won’t be easy. It will likely be an up-and-down process, with a few steps forward followed by a few steps back. Gabriel has a chance to get better, though, whereas we already know what Flacco is on this downside portion of his great career.
This is obviously a big deal, and so the sooner the Browns do this, the sooner they have the opportunity to improve.
The other players in that Browns locker room, especially those on a defense that is outstanding and is starting to wear down because of getting virtually no help from the offense, deserve it. The audacity of hope is so crucial.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski supposed to be the quarterback whisperer. It’s time to find out that reputation is deserved.
