They’ve got the best quarterback in the game by far in Patrick Mahomes.
They’ve also got the best head coach in the game in Andy Reid.
So, then, since quarterback and head coach are the two most important positions in team sports, it’s easy, really, to pick the Kansas City Chiefs to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 next Sunday.
Go back and look at the history of the Super Bowls, and before that, that of the NFL Champoknship Games, and you’ll see that the teams with the best quarterback and head coach usually always win.
When quarterback Otto Graham and head coach Paul Brown were paired together on the first 10 Browns teams from 1946–55, they went to 10 straight league championship games, winning seven. That’s a staggering statistic, and it has just gone from there.
Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers is a decent quarterback. His head coach, former Browns offendive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, is one of the best in the game as well. But when you stack them up against Mahomes and Reid, they fall short.
Now, could the 49ers win the Super Bowl? Yes, of course, and it would hardly be a surprise for they have a great. Plus, the NFL is built so that teams don’t repeat as Super Bowl champions, and the Chiefs won it all last year. So, for them to win it again would be defying the odds.
Even with that, though, I believe more in them than I do the 49ers. The Chiefs always find a way to win. Mahomes always find a way to make a play. Reid always find a way to make the right call at the right time.
That the Chiefs are from the AFC does not bode well for the rest of the conference, including the Browns. As such, it will be hard for AFC clubs to get past Kansas City and get to the Super Bowl, but that’s another story for another time.
Right now, I’m picking the Chiefs. I may circle back before the Super Bowl to see if I still feel that way as the game approaches, but I can’t fathom changing my mind. History doesn’t lie.
