I’m confident in Hue’s confidence

OK, so the Browns have made the big trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, pushing them back from No. 2 overall to No. 8 in next Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft and thus taking themselves out of the running for the two top-rated quarterbacks, Cal’s Jared Goff and North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz.

But that doesn’t take the Browns out of the running to get a quarterback somewhere in this draft, as head coach Hue Jackson has said he would do.

But where? When?

And, most importantly, who will it be?

We don’t know any of that.

But perhaps Jackson does.

Either that, or he’s putting up a good front.

Look, our dear readers, you know I didn’t want that trade. I wanted the Browns to stay right where they were, at No. 2, and get that franchise quarterback – finally – before we all end up in the old folks home. I am not backing off the contention that it was the right thing to do.

But the Browns thought differently. More specifically, Jackson thought differently. He was the guy whose belief in finding a quarterback in a roundabout kind of way, paved the way for Browns Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown to pull the trigger on the deal.

Whatever the case, we agree to disagree.

With all that having been said, though, I still like the way Jackson did it. I don’t like that he did it, mind you, but if it were going to happen, I like the way he did it.

Jackson is so supremely confident in everything that has to do with this draft and getting the Browns turned around, especially when it comes to quarterback.

He has promised that he will get the quarterback situation right.

Yes, he has promised.

That’s how confident he is.

But it’s not a smug confidence, but rather the kind of confidence that inspires those around him to hitch their wagons to him and believe in what he says.

It’s been a long time since the Browns have had a head coach that confident, and at the same time that believable.

I can’t put into words how intriguing that is. It’s so out there – Jackson is so out there — that you want to stand back and watch it all play out, lest you miss seeing something special.

OK, Hue Jackson, I don’t believe in what you and your team did, but I am among those – however many there are, I don’t know – who believe in you.

There has to be something you know that the rest of us don’t. Either that, or you’re crazy, and I don’t think you’re that.

So do your thing and we’ll see how it all plays out.

After all, the way the Browns had done business from 1999-2015 sure didn’t work, so I am willing to give this new approach – and a new head coach in Hue Jackson – a chance.

We don’t have any other choice, do we?
