The 2016 NFL Draft is over.
Now comes the hard part, and that is to take all these pieces parts – 14 of them, to be exact, the Browns’ most since 1979 — and begin to mold them into a team.
So, how did the Browns do?
Who knows?
Giving draft guides is so 1978.
I’m not going to waste your time or mine in crafting a grade for something that hasn’t happened yet. It would be like writing a restaurant review after I’ve ordered the food.
Come back and talk to me in about two or three years and I’ll let you know how the Browns did.
I will, though, give them a grade for the manner in which they conducted themselves in the draft – that is, if their picks made sense.
And for that, I’ll give them an A.
The Browns needed wide receivers, and they went out and drafted four of them.
The Browns needed pass rushers, and they went out and drafted four of them as well.
The Browns needed defensive backs, and they went out and drafted two of them.
The Browns needed a young quarterback to bring along, and they went out and got one, though perhaps not as early as I would have liked.
As we’ve said over the last three days, the Browns did common-sense things, which is something the previous regime never did.
That’s all you can do as a team, to lay out a well-conceived plan and then carry it out.
We’ll see how it works out, but as for right now, the Browns have continued the momentum that started when they hired Hue Jackson as head coach.
Jackson knows better, however. He knows he and the rest of this regime will be judged not on the components of their plan, but rather solely on how successful it turns out to be in terms of leading to wins. So if the plan blows up in his face, then he has to quickly come up with another plan that does work.
That’s how it is in the bottom-line business that is the NFL.
Determining that is for way down the road, however. For all that the Browns have gone through in the expansion era, they and their fans deserve a chance to celebrate victories big and small.
So, fans, go ahead and whoop it up some. This is a big one. The draft always is.
But don’t get drunk on this kind of success. It could be fool’s good, or perhaps not.
