If Browns get Kaepernick, what happens in Draft?

There will be plenty of questions posed to the Browns, especially head coach Hue Jackson, the quarterback maker, if they end up pulling off a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

But the biggest questions – and the only ones that really matter because of the tremendous impact they will have elsewhere in the organization – is whether or not the acquisition of Kaepernick would preclude the Browns from also selecting a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick they hold in the NFL Draft in about 6½ weeks.

That is, would Kaepernick, in essence, replace either North Dakota’s Carson Wentz or Cal’s Jared Goff, the top-rated quarterbacks in the draft? Or because quarterback is the most important position on any team, and such a huge need on the Browns, would they get Kaepernick and then also a young guy at No. 2 to bring along?

Here’s another way to think about that same issue: If the Browns get Kaepernick, would they stay at No. 2 and, instead of taking a quarterback, select a player at another position? Or would they trade out of No. 2 altogether and move down to get an extra pick or two? And if they did, would they use their first pick, wherever it would turn out to be, on a quarterback? If they didn’t get a quarterback with that first pick, would they draft one later? And if so, then how much later? Would it be in the second or third round? Would it be near the bottom of the draft?

There’s a lot to consider – really, everything is on the table, it seems – and it all hinges on what ends up happening concerning Kaepernick.

Regardless of what ultimately takes place, though, the mere possibility of acquiring Kaepernick has added a lot of intrigue to a draft that, especially with that first pick, already had a ton of it for the Browns.

Stay tuned.

But that goes without saying. We know you will.

After all, it’s great theatre.
