Dear Mr. Haslam:
I will keep this brief because you’re a busy man, and so am I. We don’t have a lot of time to waste, right?
So, let me get right to it: I don’t have any faith in you. I don’t trust you to fix the Browns and get them to where they need to go. By the way, just to let you know where I’m coming from, they were my Browns long, long, long before they were your Browns.
It hurts me to say that I don’t trust you. You and I are about the same age, and when we get to this stage of our life, a lot of people stop trusting us and having faith in us because they’re convinced we’ve lost a little bit off our fastball.
And as much as I don’t trust you, I really, really, really don’t trust — a thousand times more — your general manager, Andrew Berry. I don’t trust him any farther than I can throw him and you and I both know that at this age, we’re not throwing anything heavy too far these days.
But you and he said the other day that you guys were going to get the Browns rejuvenated and headed in the right direction, hire a good head coach, have a good draft, get the quarterback situation straightened out and all the other things that need to be done for the club to become a contender again. That’s what I want, of course, but I just don’t think you guys can do it.
As such, then, I guess the purpose this letter is to let you know that, even though this is not Missouri, the Show-Me State, I want you to show me that I’m wrong. I would love to be wrong. I would be thrilled to be wrong. It would delight me to no end to be wrong. I pray that I’m wrong.
I don’t want to hear about some plan. The only thing that I’m concerned about are wins, playoff appearances and championships. Everything else is just verbal diarrhea, as former Brown’s head coach Sam Rutigliano, so aptly do used to call it.
Let’s get this thing going — not tomorrow, not the next day, or the day after that or the week after that or next month or two years down the road. I am talking about right now, doing a lot of things right, right in a row.
You will be hearing from me again. I won’t let up on this. I hope someday I’m apologizing to you and praising you for proving you wrong. But I hope you will apologize to me and the fans if you don’t do it. You have our football team, which is a precious heirloom, especially in this region. Treat it gently, carefully, wisely and respectfully.
Good luck.
All the best,
Steve King
P.S.: Don’t draft a quarterback up near the top next year, because you already have the guy in Shedeur Sanders. How about instead some offensive linemen, some wide receivers and maybe even a defensive tackle?
