I don’t think the Browns will honor the late Jim Brown by naming their stadium after him, and I think that’s a good move.
The facility, which reverted back to being Cleveland Browns Stadium recently after the club and FirstEnergy, the previous naming rights holder, parted ways, will find a new naming rights holder. It will bring in significant money, and the Browns can’t afford to — and won’t — turn that down.
But they can name the playing field for Brown, and I think that might be the way to go. It would give them a permanent recognition and memory of Brown going forward.
I also think they will give serious consideration to putting his No. 32 on the helmrts for this season, like they did in the late 1950s for three seasons. They would likely make the slight change to the striping on the helmet to make it authentic, too, removing the two brown stripes on either side of the white stripe that have since been added.
What a cool idea that would be.
But again, anything the Browns do will first have to be run past his widow, Monique, and their family. And that’s the way it should be.
