HOPE? OR HOPELESSNESS?

The Jacksonville Jaguars won three games – just three games! – in 2016.

They won just five games in 2015.

They won just three games in 2014.

They won just four games in 2013.

They won just two games in 2012.

They won just five games in 2011.

My addition may be a little off because I’m just a public-school kid, but I think that’s just 22 wins in six seasons.

Going into this season, the last time the Jaguars had had a winning record was 2007. Stop me when you think this sounds familiar.

That’s also the last time they made the playoffs, when they made it to the divisional round before losing 31-20 to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium to finish 12-6.

And yet here they are with a nine-win turnaround from 2017, taking a 12-6 record into Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against – you guessed it — the Patriots at – you guessed it again — Gillette Stadium. It comes 10 years and nine days after that divisional loss.

One more similarity: the Jags beat the Pittsburgh Steelers by two points, 31-29, at Heinz Field to get a shot at the Patriots a decade ago. They beat Pittsburgh by three points, 45-42, at Heinz Field, last weekend to advance to Sunday’s contest.

The Jaguars were so bad during those losing seasons – so unappealing to their fans – that the top sections of their home stadium, EverBank Field, were tarped-off so the rows and rows and rows of empty seats were less conspicuous.

Out of sight, out of mind, as they say.

Not anymore. Now Jacksonville can’t get enough of its Jaguars.

Sigh.

Does that give hope to the Browns?

Or are the Browns so downtrodden right now – so far away – that there’s no way in the world they go come out next season and pull off the same kind of worst-to-first performance as this season’s Jags?

Hmmm.

We’ll see, but thinking that it could happen can warm up Browns fans on these cold winter nights. And right now, that’s as good as it’s going to get.
