History Repeating? Cleveland Nears Another 1-31-Type Nightmare

Remember the dark, dark days of nearly a decade ago when the Browns went 1-31 over a two-year period, including a humiliating 0-16 in 2017, and were just 4-44 when you extend the span to three years by adding 2015?

Sure you do. It still makes you sick to your stomach.

But here’s something else that will also make you start spitting up those Corn Flakes this morning: the Browns are now closer to that nightmare — that same pothole-filled road — than they’ve been since then.

With their 0-2 start this year, they have lost eight in a row dating back to last year. They’ve not won since Nov. 21, 2024 when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-17 on Thursday Night Football in a snowstorm at Huntington Bank Field. That was exactly a week before Thanksgiving. Go into your nearest department store now and you’ll see the display of decorations for this year’s Thanksgiving in about two months. OK, so now you can count on your turkey and dressing coming up at some point as well. Pass the antacid.

Moreover, the Browns have dropped 10 of their last 11 and 15 of their last 17. The last defeat was a 41-17 rout administered by the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday. It would’ve been worse had the Browns not scored a touchdown in garbage time.

And it may not get markedly better anytime soon. The Green Bay Packers, who went from good to great and boosted their confidence level and expectations level tenfold when they pulled off thatblockbuster trade with the Dallas Cowboys to acquire one of the game’s best defensive players in linebacker Micah Parsons, visit the Browns on Sunday. Then, over the next three weeks, they play, away from Cleveland, the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. See any wins there? Indeed this could be 0-6 in a hurry.

OK, so how did the Browns get to this miserable point — again, and in such a relatively short time?

Ahh, I’m glad you asked. We’ll answer that question the next time.
